They are similar, but not the same thing.

An Advance Directive generally spells out WHAT your medical wishes are just in case you can't tell the doctor yourself (think: do you want life support, do you want to be an organ donor, etc.)

A Durable Power of Attorney says WHO gets to make medical decisions for you if you can't make them yourself (think: should we go with treatment A or riskier treatment B).

Most people should have both. Having an Advance Directive is good, but you can't predict and pre-decide every situation that may arise in a medical emergency.

Note: This is very general and how it works in California. Depending on where you live it may work differently. Check out the links below. They do a really good job of explaining everything.

Like this: Have you had an accident? Did you slip and fall? Are you confused and don't know where to turn? Call weiss and weiss. Where here to help you win your case and get you the money that is owed you. We have easy financing and 24/7 call coverage. Your ad should play on the local radio, over and over again. The radio is the best medium for this.

Do good work, rely on word of mouth. There is nothing sleazier than those ads for lawyers where they're grinning, showing off their huge capped teeth, promising RESULTS.

Failing that, a tasteful ad in the yellow pages would hopefully suffice.

Only if you are a member of the bar, licensed to practice in that area and are representing him (or her) in the matter that has you in the pokey. There are two types of "Power of Attorney" documents. The first is a "general" power of attorney and the other is a "limited" (specific) power of attorney. With the general power of attorney that person can act in your name without restriction and bind you legally to whatever he does (civilly). The limited version allows the designee the right to act only in specific areas (buying/selling property, child care, etc.).

So, basically, a power of attorney is a CIVIL document and will not qualify your girlfriend unlimited visitation. Oh!, if you are found guilty you must serve your own time....no surrogates!

You are unclear on this concept. What you were given is the power to conduct the inmates financial affairs. This in no way gives you power of an attorney. The guards would laugh you right out of there if you tried to use your POA to get into the jail to see your bud(possibly even jailed for impersinating an attorney).
